Each year Sober Corps hosts two annual events to spread the word about and raise support for the organization’s critical mission. Each winter we host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in memory of Malik Sealy, a former Minnesota Timberwolves player who was killed by a drunk driver, and this summer we kicked off the first annual “12 Holes for 12 Steps” golf event to benefit Sober Corps. If you’re looking for a fun way to support Sober Corps, we encourage you to check out one of our events.
3-on-3 Basketball Tournament
2012 Date: Saturday, February 11th
Each winter, Sober Corps hosts its annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in the Malik Sealy Gym of Dreams located inside Gethsemane Episcopal Church. Sealy, a former Minnesota Timberwolves player, was killed by a drunk driver. In addition to helping raise funds to support the Sober Corps mission, the tournament aims to increase awareness of the dangers of alcohol. To enter a team into the upcoming tournament, please contact Stephanie by email or by calling 612.767.4360 or fill out this form and return it us.
12 Holes for 12 Steps Golf Tournament
2012 Date: Thursday, September 20th
In a crowded marketplace, Sober Corps’ “12 Holes for 12 Steps” Golf Tournament shines. All of the proceeds from this tournament are used to grow our mentorship program, expand our community outreach, and launch free educational workshops for our participants, covering topics such as personal finance and budgeting, basic computer skills, job search and interview tips, and parenting skills.
Why 12 Holes?
- Saves time. Golf fundraisers have a reputation for running just a bit too long. Even the legendary Jack Nicklaus has endorsed a shorter round, recently saying that “Cutting a round of golf to 12 holes would be more palatable for golfers who don’t want to make it a day-long process.”
- It’s a nod to our mission supporting 12-step recovery programs by providing life-skill mentors to help people through their first years of freedom from chemical addiction.
- We’re all about second chances and so is this tournament! Each team will play nine holes (either the front nine or the back nine) and will repeat the first three holes played, only recording their best score for each of those holes.
